Study Abroad

Study Abroad Committee

Renamed in 1998 the Study Abroad Committee, the former China Committee has since 1989 worked with Wake Forest University to administer the SASASAAS fall semester study abroad program in Beijing. This program is open to all SASASAAS member institutions and scholarship funds are awarded at the discretion of the committee. The committee also serves as a clearinghouse for information on member institutions' study abroad programs that are open to students and faculty within the consortium.

China Program (CET Chinese Studies Programs, Beijing)

Time:  Fall semester every year (Tentative Dates: Orientation and Arrival in China: End of August. Depart China mid-December.)

Eligibility:  Sophomore standing or above. 3.0 GPA preferred. Demonstration of a keen interest in the Chinese language. Open to undergraduate students. Must belong to a school that is a member of the SASASAAS consortium.

Academic Program:  If available, a faculty member from one of the SASASAAS schools will accompany the students to Beijing, oversee the program, and teach one course.

Cost:   The cost for Fall 2009 is $12,650.00 and it includes tuition, room, organized cultural excursions, textbooks, other educational materials, visa fees, and departure tax. Students are responsible for their own transportation to the orientation, personal expenses, any additional travel, and any fees required by their University.

All students are required to take intensive Chinese language courses (10-11 hours) and two content courses taught in English (3 hours each) from a list of electives offered in the CET's Chinese Studies Program (CET Chinese Studies Program Courses). The course entitled "21st Century Beijing" listed in the CET Chinese Studies Program will NOT be a required course for SASASAAS students. Instead, this "21st Century Beijing" course will be considered as one of the elective courses for SASASAAS students to choose. If students decide to take a third elective course, they would have to pay an additional fee to CET for this extra course.

Students have the option of enrolling in extra-curricular courses such as Chinese cooking, painting, calligraphy, and martial arts at no extra charge.

Application:  SASASAAS students interested in this program should consult with the study abroad office of their home institution. All SASASAAS applicants should apply directly to the CET Chinese Studies Program in Beijing via the CET online application (CET Academic Programs Program Application). Applicants will also have to submit the SASASAAS consortium approval form to Jessica Czarnowski at Wake Forest University by March 1st. Students should contact their study abroad office to obtain the approval form.
